More than 20,000 people attended the festival, including over 2,000 international journalists and broadcasters. The Festival is one of the largest and most innovative film festivals in the world, presenting more than 1,500 films from more than 100 countries. The Festival is a member of the FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Associations) and has been accredited by FIAPF as a 'Festival of Latin American Cinema'.
The more than 450 films in the competition program are divided into three sections: world premieres, world premieres in the Contemporary World Cinema section, and North American premieres. Each world premiere section is accompanied by a short introduction and a documentary about the filmmaker.
Nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards and winner of the Magritte Award for Best Direction, Studio Babak Nafisi in association with the Cinémathèque nationale de Lille and the Saudi Fund for Arts and Culture has commissioned the creation of a film production laboratory. This is the first time that a French public cultural institution has made such a commitment. The production lab is committed to creating a film culture in the Arab world by collecting and organizing stories from all over the region and by encouraging Arab filmmakers to support each other and collaborate creatively. Through five years, the lab is going to create a platform for the exchange of ideas and a production environment that will challenge established habits.
