The Tales of the Hall, however, were not the only writings that troubled Crabbe during these last years. He was deeply dissatisfied with the appearance of those parts of the Tales which had been written after his wife's death. He felt that he had been unfair in the first instance to his first wife, in telling her of the destruction of her early hopes of marriage with him, and had been even less just in the sequel, when he had made his second marriage the means of saving her from the alternatives of starvation or prostitution. It is scarcely necessary to remark that this second marriage was not to his second wife, Mrs. Crabbe, a concubine, but to Mrs. Clarendon, a young lady of his acquaintance. Mrs. Crabbe was content to live at a cottage near the New Inn, to which she was invited at the time of Crabbe's retirement from his brother-in-law's home, and there she remained for the last ten years of her husband's life. Of the still more serious quarrels between the poet and his second wife we will say no more, and of his son George and daughter Mary we shall have need to speak later. But it is certain that the reserve and delicacy of Crabbe's later intercourse with his wife was not a subject in which he was inclined to be communicative to his son and daughter. He regarded his second marriage as a stain on his character, and said nothing of it in his own home, but he did not forget it in the more public sphere of his correspondence. In a letter dated July 17, 1829, he writes:
