Hope you like the post and will not face a problem while. The United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) is urging religious leaders to tackle a looming public health crisis caused by malnutrition and malnutrition-related diseases.
The agency says an estimated 100 million people in the world are affected by malnutrition, with around 20 million cases of severe acute malnutrition in children.
A report released at the start of the U.N. General Assembly this week by WHO and the World Food Programme said there are alarming increases in stunting and deaths among young children in several countries including South Africa, Indonesia and Nigeria.
While deaths have decreased in the last decade, stunting remains a major public health challenge, particularly among children under five, the report said.
"People and families will often suffer and societies will be troubled with the high costs of caring for families with chronically malnourished children," said Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO's director-general, during the launch of the report at the U.N. headquarters in New York.
She said the UN agency and its partners are working with governments, communities, health workers and the private sector to improve the nutrition situation in children and other vulnerable groups of people.
"Our children are the most important asset of any society," Chan said.
"If we want a better world for our children, we must work for it. We must work together."
The report warns that the health effects of malnutrition are "wide-ranging and affect cognitive development, learning ability, economic productivity, physical growth, health status, reproductive potential and family happiness."
It urges governments to ensure that all people have access to nutritious food and that all sectors are actively involved in addressing the nutrition challenge.
"A nutrition challenge that is not addressed leaves an untreated wound that can fester into a severe public health threat, that can lead to suffering for the whole society," said Dr. Osman Siddique, a public health specialist 0b46394aab
