When Dinesh turns to his pregnant wife, the film exposes the extent of his hypocrisy about faith and family: although he reveres the Hindu gods and worships his forefathers, he’s also been cozying up to the Muslim faith. He and his new wife go to see an Islamic preacher, and the preacher gives Dinesh a calling to convert to Islam. I Am A Muslim shows the faith’s contradictions in India, but also the even deeper irony of how we have found ourselves in this situation.
This is the third film of a trilogy by Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Tannishtha Chatterjee, and it combines the two women’s perspectives — one a Hindu, one a Muslim — as they examine the forces that have led them to this modern-day India, where they have each had to decide between their religious identities. They speak to each other, two women and two women of faith, about their experiences, as well as their love for their children.
Siddiqui and Chatterjee’s previous films, Love, Sex And The City (2012) and A Gentleman (2014), were about the lives of modern women. They were about what it was like to live in a country with a confusing and increasingly complicated multi-faith identity, and to choose between two faiths. In this film, they take on the challenge of showing how religious differences in India have become more prevalent, and more divisive.
The film is set in Noida, India, which is being extended with the new Metro Rail, the Metro that is going to link Noida and New Delhi, the capital. The film tracks the lives of three women: Amrita (Sanjana Kapoor), Satish (Abhishek Kapoor), and Radha (Nawazuddin Siddiqui). Amrita is a Hindu woman from a traditional Hindu family; Satish is a Muslim man who lives with his family in a small town, in the countryside; and Radha is an Islamic woman who lives in New Delhi.
All three women attend a religious college.
