He began his composing career with a jazz album, Academy Award for Best Music, Original Story, Score and Adaptation, in 1959, for the 1959 film The Great Man.[22] That same year, Williams's jazz piano-and-piano quartet performed live at Carnegie Hall.[23] The group premiered a suite of Williams's song "Soy," a Williamsist in-joke. The song later evolved into the Ocean song "Comfortably Numb" in his next album, The Inn of the Sixth Happiness in 1960.

He was at his artistic peak in 1960, composing numerous popular songs, a jazz album, and three film scores: Camelot in 1960, The Fugitive Kind in 1961, and The Subject Was Roses (written for the musical flop Our Man Flint, initially titled There Was a Crooked Man).[37] Williams's friend and colleague Stomu Yamashta joined the Camelot film scoring team after Williams's departure. Williams chose to leave the Camelot musical because he was frustrated with the production's focus on the romance between two leads. He had been unhappy with the fact that the song "The End of the World" was written as a love song to the film's male lead, and had requested he be removed from the score.[38]
